Ampney Crucis Parish Council

Parish Councils and Meetings began in 1894 when administrative responsibility for parishes moved from the Church to elected laymen.  Only over the last forty years, however,  have they acquired real responsibilities.

Ampney Crucis Parish Council represents the 250 or so households in the civil parish of Ampney Crucis.  With seven Councillors and an executive officer (the Clerk),  the Council meets six times a year on the second Monday each January, March and so on.  Councillors serve for four years; the next elections are in May 2007.

If you would like to get involved in some of the background work of the village, why not speak to   the   Chairman,   David Vessey 01285 851438,  or the  Clerk,  Helen Tonks 01285 640718.

Ampney St Peter

With nearly 50 homes, Ampney St Peter currently stretches along the A417. Most of the houses are concentrated up the village street, with a few on the main road and some on Charlham Lane.

The village has one pub, The Red Lion, one of the oldest in Gloucestershire. There’s an equestrian centre at Can Court, and a few residents run businesses from their homes.

The Moor, on the south side of the A417, is used for an annual car boot sale in August and a few other events. The Parish Meeting convenes twice a year to discuss village affairs and the spending of the precept.

Ampney St Mary

Ampney St Mary consists of some 40 dwellings. Originally it was clustered around the Saxon Church of St Mary on what is now the A417. The village was demolished, probably in the 18th century, probably as a result of some local epidemic. Some dwellings were rebuilt in the present location, then called Ashbrook. The combined village retained the  name, probably by direction of the Established Church. The village has the status of a Parish Meeting. Its officials are listed below.
