The Cirencester and South Cotswolds branch of the MS Society would like to thank all the people who came along to the Cream Tea and those who gave donations. The branch earned a total of £140.

Peter and Sue Andsell of Ampney St Mary hosted a very successful Wine and Cheese Party in aid of the RNLI.

Many thanks to everyone who has helped tidy up the bank of the Ampney Brook along the Common in Ampney St Peter. It is now a pleasure to walk the area and lots of wildlife has returned. Further volunteers will be needed to tidy up the drainage ditch from the pond outlet, after the blockage is removed.

Farewell Tea Party

A farewell tea party was held at Radnor House, courtesy of Joan Sparks for Margaret Hitchens. Margaret was the Clerk to the A St P Parish Meeting until she moved to Fairford

Calling all Students

Are you a student or apprentice who would like financial help with your studies?

The Robert Pleydell Charity provides financial assistance for tertiary education students and apprentices under 25 years of age living in the parish of Ampney Crucis (or whose parents are resident in the parish).

If you wish to apply, contact the secretary of the trust, John Franklin, Waterton Farm House, Ampney Crucis for an application form and your request will be considered by the trustees.  Awards will be made at the end of the year.

Ampney Crucis Association

Residents will recall that in late 2001, following a good deal of public discussion and a referendum, the Ampney Crucis Association supported an application for planning permission on the part of Park Farms Ltd on the basis of a reciprocal package which it felt was in the interest of the village. In essence, the package provided for Park Farms Limited to receive planning consent for the building of five houses within the village, while in return, 47 acres of land, largely in the centre of the village, would be conveyed into the ownership of a village trust. In addition Park Farms Ltd would build a village shop unit on a small corner of the land, a football field would be created on some of the land off Allotment Lane and various environmental works would be carried out, including creation of a wetland area near to Ampney Brook.

Following some doubts raised by Cotswold District Council and the Parish Council the application was withdrawn in December 2001 for further consideration. A revised application is now under preparation.

The committee of the Association will review the whole scheme again when the application is in draft and assuming they are satisfied with the modifications made, details of the scheme will be publicised again. In this way new residents can become familiar with it and all residents can seek answers to any questions they may have.

Letter from your District Councillor

My first two months have been extremely busy attending Council meetings, committee meetings (I am Vice Chairman of the Community committee), Training days and several meetings in the Ward. In addition I have dealt with a number of letters and telephone calls on local issues. I fully support the Ampney Crucis Parish council’s stand on the Playground and I attended a meeting in Ampney St Peter on 28th June regarding Flooding/Sewage

Ampney Crucis Playground

Now that the decision has been taken to proceed with the venture, the hard work of raising funds has started.  Applications will be submitted to a number of grant awarding bodies in the coming weeks.  Progress will be reported in future editions of TAT.

Drains and Sewage

in Ampney St Peter

An open meeting was recently held in Ampney St Peter to discuss the problems of drains and sewage. It was well attended by representatives from Councils, Environment Agency and Thames Water.

The key issues are:

Sewage:

·        A number of properties suffer from poor siphoning of WC’s.

·        Sewage surcharge on the Moor enters the Ampney Brook through a drainage ditch, which is to be fully reinstated.

·        The incoming sewer from Ampney St Mary surcharges at the two lowest inspection covers. Sewage has also entered properties at this lower level.

Thames Water are conducting a study in the area including camera surveys the findings from which will determine the next stage. However TW also explained the necessity to consider all their priorities.

There was a lively discussion and the queries included the value of inspections during dry conditions and whether the prioritisation would recognise the public health and environmental cost. In addition, concern was expressed at TW’s rejection of compensation claims based on an assertion of abnormal rainfall. Independent evidence is that the local rainfall has been within the normal statistical variation.

The TW survey involves inspection of properties and all residents are thanked for their co-operation.

Surface Water:

With regard to surface water drainage, the findings of an evaluation based on Environment Agency guidance were presented. The survey indicated that the basic drainage system, laid down some 300 years ago, has the capacity to handle extreme rainfall conditions up to the 100-year risk level but that its capability has been compromised. Important works to reinstate its effectiveness are being pursued with the authorities. The most urgent of these is the rebuilding of the riverbank.

Although the timing of the works is not yet known, your active co-operation will assist in all of these works being completed to the benefit of all.

Full details are available on the noticeboards.

Allotment Lane

In Ampney Crucis, at the top of Allotment Lane, there is a grass triangle which Don Underwood has taken under his wing.  He has created a seat out of the old Methodist Chapel steps and planted a tree and some bulbs.  Unfortunately, the area is being damaged by motorists using the entrance to Allotment Lane as a turning circle.

The Highways Authority have agreed to help and, as part of their small works programme, will be laying a border of granite setts round the triangle in an attempt to protect it.

Report a Pothole?

The County Council inspects all primary roads and pavements every 3 months and carries out a detailed assessment once a year. In the year to March 2003, 207 miles of the county’s roads and 66 miles of footways were resurfaced. But did you know you can help by reporting potholes on major roads.

To report a pothole or to find out where there are roadworks contact the GCC helpline on (01452 425500 or www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/roads

Right to Roam

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (generally known as the ‘Right to Roam’ legislation) is gradually being implemented.  The draft map for the West has gone for consultation and is available for comment until 30 September.

The new laws cover ‘access land’ which is generally mountain, moor, heath, down and registered common land.  Most of the three parishes are made up of cultivated land which is specifically excluded from the right to roam so the new laws will have little impact.

Autumn Tidy-up

It will soon be that time of year again!  Volunteers are required to give up just two hours of their time on Sunday 12 October to continue the work of tidying up the Ampney Crucis Burial Ground.  There has been a good deal of progress in the last two or three years and it’s surprising just how much can be achieved in a short time.

Residents of Poulton exchange that have registered their interest in Broadband access to the internet has now reached 91. This is more than twice the number in January when ACT started the campaign. No minimum number of registrations has yet been set by BT but it will be interesting to monitor what happens in South Cerney, as they are within reach of their target minimum 294/300.

To register your interest access www.bt.com/broadband and follow the instructions – it’s quite easy!
