Alexander Belford & James Clarke

Belford Clarke’s publishing house joined the small group of pirate publishers in the 1880’s who were successfully sued for breach of copyright by Estes & Lauriat.

The precocious Alexander, born in Ireland in 1854 but brought up a Canadian in Toronto, published his first book at the age of 13, and yes, that too was pirated !

The  partnership with Clarke was formed in 1875, and they re-located to Chicago where the business thrived for the next 18 years.

Belford became Mark Twain’s  enemy no. 1 after he re-published Tom Sawyer in Toronto without permission. Mark Twain famously said  “Belford Bros., the miserable thieves couldn't buy a sentence from me for any money”.  Twain unsuccessfully sued Belford for copyright infringement in Chicago in the 1880’s (the court deemed Twain had not copyrighted his works).

Belford Clarke & Co was split up in 1893 and Alexander formed the Werner Company. He retired to California in 1900 and died in 1906.
