The American News Company (registered office 121 Nassau Street, New York) was formed in February 1864 as a successor to Sinclair Tousey and Dexter, Hamilton & Co., with Sinclair Tousey as president, and Henry Dexter as vice-president. Their advertisements read "The American News Co. takes the whole edition of nearly all the leading periodicals, etc." Henry Dexter (1813-1910) eventually became President of the Company, and later joined America’s long list of philanthropists. They appear to have published the 1873-76 editions on behalf of the London owners, but took advantage of producing an “unauthorised” version in 1882. No doubt they were discouraged when Estes & Lauriat successfully sued other publishers that year !
